Towards a Resilient Rhode Island:

Responding to climate change with leadership, innovation, and economic development

Business Leaders Speak Out in Favor of the Resilient RI Act

The science is clear: the climate is changing and Rhode Island is particularly at risk. As business leaders, we know that the future of our state’s economy will be affected by decisions we make today regarding climate change.

Rising sea levels and extreme weather resulting from climate change has the potential of damaging and destroying sources of revenue for the state. The beaches, historical coastal towns, and popular bays that are the backbone of Rhode Island’s tourist industry stand to be washed away. Businesses located near rivers and in flood zones will be repeatedly inundated. Heat waves will pose a serious health threat to working populations. Our aging infrastructure system is likely to falter and electricity shortages will become more frequent. A resilient Rhode Island understands these risks, develops adaptive measures to withstand climate change impacts; adaptation today is critical to prevent economic losses tomorrow.

Adaptation presents a challenge, but also an opportunity to develop the state’s green economy and create new businesses. Strengthening our state’s infrastructure will mean more construction jobs in the state and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energies and an innovation economy will create jobs that cannot be exported. We believe that companies that act today will gain a competitive advantage tomorrow. As business leaders, we want businesses to bounce back when impacts from climate change occur. Adaptation, in short, is good business.

We support our state’s proactive response to climate change through the Resilient Rhode Island Act. The bill aims to provide a comprehensive and coordinated state response to climate change by integrating both adaptation and greenhouse gas mitigation strategies while incentivizing a sustainable innovation economy unique to Little Rhody’s strengths as the Ocean State.

As business leaders, we support the Resilient RI legislation and efforts to increase the state’s resiliency. We stand behind the state’s effort to prioritize the Ocean State’s economic future and turn the challenge of our changing climate into opportunity.

Signed,
